About Lake Taupo

About Lake Taupo

The largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Taupo is a popular holiday spot for locals and visitors alike. The town of Taupo on the lake's northeastern shore has blossomed into a major outdoor activities center, offering everything from rafting to skydiving. Even if you're not looking for extreme adventures, Taupo is worth a visit to see more examples of the region's geothermal wonders. Within easy traveling distance of Rotorua to the north and the mountainous areas to the south, the town is becoming increasingly developed, but it's still a fairly laid-back place. The abundance of activities here mean that it can get busy, though, particularly during school vacations and the summer holidays. Book late, and a bed might be difficult to find.

Fishing is major lure, both on Lake Taupo and on the rivers to the south. The lake and backcountry rivers are some of the few places where tales of the "big one" can actually be believed. The Tongariro River is particularly famous as an angler's paradise.

Southwest of Lake Taupo rise the three volcanic peaks that make up Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's first national park. This is a year-round magnet for skiers and trampers. Even if you don't have much time, skirting the peaks provides a rewarding route on your way south to Wanganui or Wellington.
