C'est la vie au bout du monde

$$$-$$$$, French, Akaroa

Fodor's Review:

Loitering with intent on the steps of this little wooden bungalow "at the end of the world" is encouraged, because it's the only way to study the blackboard menu. There are only a handful of tables, so sharing space is encouraged. Two sittings, at 6 and 8:30 PM, help get around this. The walls, the window frames, and even the ceiling are covered in graffiti left by happy diners. Your dish -- whether it's venison à la diana, a salmon steak, the filet de boeuf served with blue vein cheese and blueberries, or the ever popular escargots -- will come to the table in copper dishes for serving yourself. Don't miss the crème caramel, or the dame blanche -- homemade ice cream served with a hot chocolate sauce.
