This park, once a site of ceremonial and religious importance to Aboriginal people, contains a number of important monuments, including the obelisk formerly used as the point from which all distances from Sydney were measured. On a stone plinth at the bottom of the park is the anchor of HMS Sirius, flagship of the First Fleet, which struck a reef and sank off Norfolk Island in 1790. The bronze statue with his hands on his hips represents Thomas Mort, who in 1879 became the first to export refrigerated cargo from Australia. The implications of this shipment were enormous. Mutton, beef, and dairy products suddenly became valuable export commodities, and for most of the following century agriculture dominated the Australian economy.
