Travelers are at the mercy of private travel agents, guidebooks, and online travel forums for the most up-to-date information on Tibet. State-run travel bureaus do exist, but are often downright unhelpful. Such travel agencies as Tibet Travel and Snow Lion Tours are very knowledgeable and offer great service.
About the Weather
From November to January, temperatures become frightfully cold (−10°F), but the climate is dry and the skies are blue. Many tourist sites in Lhasa shorten their opening hours in winter months. From June to August highs reach 80°F, although it can feel hotter. Summer sees a bit of rain, and occasionally roads will be closed to popular tourist destinations, including the Everest Base Camp. The best touring conditions occur from mid-April through May, as wildflowers bloom and snow begins to melt. September through early November, with its mild weather, is another good option.
