Sukhothai
Getting Here & Around
By Air
Thai Airways flies daily from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai. There are several Thai Airways flights daily from Bangkok to Sukhothai. Sukhothai is roughly equidistant between its own airport (a beautiful open-air terminal) and the one in Phitsanulok, which is less than an hour away by taxi or bus. Bangkok Airways also serves Sukhothai. Two flights go between Bangkok and Sukhothai daily (1 hour 20 minutes), with fares starting at about B2,000.
By Bus
Buses to Sukhothai depart from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) daily from 7 am to 11 pm, leaving roughly every 20 minutes. There are five main companies to choose from but all charge about the same, most with prices under B300. The journey takes about seven hours. Buses from Sukhothai's new bus terminal on the bypass road depart at the same times and for the same prices.
By Car
Highway 12 from Phitsanulok leads to Sukhothai and is a long, straight, and reasonably comfortable 59-km (37-mi), one-hour drive. Car rentals are available at Sukhothai airport. The drive from Bangkok, along the four-lane Highway 117, is about 440 km (273 mi), or roughly seven hours.
By Samlor & Songthaew
Sukhothai does not have local buses, and most of the population gets around in souped-up samlors or songthaews.
