This resort 3 km (2 mi) uphill from town is set in spacious, beautifully tended gardens, and is a great way to start your Umphang experience. There are 25 log bungalows of varying sizes for groups as small as 2 or as large as 10. Rooms are cozy, with glowing varnished wood and plenty of blankets and cushions on long communal mattresses. Gas-powered hot-water heaters in the tiled bathrooms mean you're guaranteed a hot shower on a cool morning. The larger Lagato house, where evening barbecues take place, is the center of activities—here you can arrange one of their popular rafting tours (one includes a flight over Thee Lor Su in a Cessna before your rafting begins). Pros: beautiful gardens; cheap package deals; close to Thee Lor Su waterfall and river. Cons: no Internet, phones, or TV.
