The Central Plains is one of the most overlooked regions of Thailand. Some people take a side trip from Bangkok to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, but fewer venture farther north to the even older cities at Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, both of which have some of the most breathtaking ruins in the country. Although some sights are decidedly off the beaten track, it isn't difficult to reach the Central Plains.
