On the Rock Review

Built, you guessed it, on a rock overlooking Karon Beach, this restaurant has great views of the water. Seafood is the specialty, but well-made Italian and traditional Thai dishes are also on the menu. It's part of the Marina Cottage hotel. Book a couple days in advance to ensure you get a beach-side table.

    On the Rock Review

Many local friends recommended I visit this restaurant, but no one seemed to tell me precisely how to get to it from the road.

I tried several times to find the access to this restaurant from the road, without success.

Finally I found it, close to the busy Dino Burger, where the elephant rides occur each evening

Located at the beginning of Karon beach, in Karon itself, "On the rock", is both open to the ocean but hidden, but from those who walk the beach.

The restaurant is part of the Marina Phuket Resort.

Wether you intend to dine at "On the rock" or just want to walk around Karon, you will find this parking spot quite useful., closeby are a number of ATM´s

I recommend you tip the security guard between 20 or 30 baht only, and will save the hassle of trying to find a parking space on busy Karon streets.

Once I had parked the car, I followed the wooden direction signs to the restaurant through the trees, walking for at least ten minutes on a wooden slated path.

High heels make it very tricky, flat shoes are recommended.

At first sight, "On the rock" is an amazing building in a kind of cave, surrounded by nature, with running water fountains, wood, light and stone are the main characters.

The sea breeze was refreshing where I sat, on one of the closest tables to the sea, that I could luckily get without booking in advance even when the restaurant was full and seemed to be the perfect place for a dinner with friends and family or for a romantic meal.

Regarding their menu, choices were wide and varied, with seafood dishes ,Thai style to Occidental/ European cuisine, they clearly were not afraid to innovate as the well known dish of "Insalata Caprese" was presented in a radical kind of burger tower shape, instead of the usual plate of sliced tomato and mozzarella.

I failed to photograph this unusual creation at the time, but being a bit of an amateur chef, I tried it when I returned to Spain ( see photo)

The attention of the staff was, as usual in Thailand either all or nothing, in this case they were too intense constantly trying to refill either my drink, as well to check if everything was fine to me.

They were dreadfully slow when I asked them to bring me the bill, I got it 20 minutes later!

But never mind that as I had the chance of watching the lanterns being lit on the beach and make my own wish.

I highly recommend this restaurant for a romantic evening event, but give yourself plenty of time.
