Modeled on Singapore's famous game park, the Chiang Mai Night Safari realized a long-held dream of Thaksin Shinnawatra, the country's former prime minister (he was deposed in a military coup in September 2006). The 100-acre reserve on the edge of the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, 10 km (6 mi) from downtown Chiang Mai, has more than 100 species of wild animals, including tigers, leopards, jaguars, and elephants. For a real thrill, board one of the special trams and tour the grounds after dark.
