Phitsanulok has a good range of dining options, from its popular pontoon and riverside restaurants to daytime canteen-style restaurants near the central clock tower on Phayalithai Road. The Muslim restaurants on Pra Ong Dam Road, opposite the town's mosque, are great for curry and roti breakfasts. The night-bazaar promenade along the Nan River contains some basic early-evening places to enjoy the sunset, including the infamous "flying vegetable restaurants," where you can sample the province's famed pak bung fire dang (stir-fried morning glory). And the veggies do fly here—when the cooks fling the morning glory to waiters, who deftly catch the food on their plates. Akathodsarod Road near the Topland Hotel is a good bet for late-night noodles.
Although not on the river, this restaurant has the edge on the competition because of its spacious bench seating and garden atmosphere. House specialties include gai khua kem (roasted chicken with salt) and boo nim tort gratium (crab fried in garlic).
An extensive menu in English makes this teak pontoon eatery on the Nan the most comfortable riverside experience. The emphasis is on fresh seafood—the pla taptim (St. Peter's fish, a delicious freshwater variety found everywhere in Thailand), served steamed with a spicy lemon-and-lime sauce, is a good choice.
