On the banks of the Mekong River sits Chiang Saen, a one-road town that in the 12th century was home to the future king Mengrai. Only fragments of the ancient ramparts survived the incursion by the Burmese in 1588, and the rest of the citadel was ravaged by fire when the last of the Burmese were ousted in 1786. Chiang Saen is now being developed as a major Mekong River port, and it's the embarkation point for river trips to Myanmar, Laos, and China.
