The sinuous white facade of the massive Loei Palace dominates the city's skyline. Surrounded by well-tended gardens, the pool is a welcome sight after a day exploring the mountains. The excellent restaurant, serving Thai, Chinese, and other dishes, reassures you that sophisticated cuisine is still to be found in this remote region. An interesting outing offered by the hotel is to the Chateau de Loei, Thailand's top vineyard. Come during low season (May-November) when prices drop 50%. Pros: large pool and fitness center; inviting and spacious lobby; dedicated smoking/no-smoking floors. Cons: overpriced in high season; superior rooms have worn furniture; poor value compared to other choices.
