Khon Kaen's skyline is dominated by the gleaming 25-story facade of the Sofitel Raja Orchid, easily Isan's most luxurious hotel. Everything about it is first-rate—the rooms are elegant, furnished with native woods and handwoven silks. If you're looking to splurge, there's always the 6,500-square-foot royal suite, which has its own helipad. The hotel is like a multistory shopping mall, with numerous restaurants (though none too impressive); Isan's largest karaoke bar, Studio 1; and the Funhouse, a disco that really lives up to its name. German visitors marvel at Thailand's first microbrewery, the Krönen Brauhaus, where you can even order bratwurst. Pros: elegant and top-class rooms; vast array of international restaurants on premises; renovated in 2008; German microbrewery in basement. Cons: street fronting the hotel is narrow and congested with traffic; curved and shallow pool not useful for swimming; neighborhood has many noisy bars and clubs.
