Friendship Bridge

Friendship Bridge Review

One of the main draws to Nong Khai is access to Laos via the Friendship Bridge. The 1-km-long (½-mi-long) bridge, which opened in 1992, has brought Nong Khai and its province a boost in tourist traffic, which means you can find accommodations here that rival those of bigger towns. To cross into Laos, you must buy a visa for US$36. From the Laotian side it's a 25-km (16-mi) samlor ride to the immensely charming capital city of Laos, Vientiane. The best way to get to Vientiane is to take the hourly bus from either Nong Khai or Udon's bus terminals into downtown Vientiane; however, you must have a visa in advance to use this service. Without a visa, take a tuk-tuk to the border (B50 to B60), then the public bus that crosses the Friendship Bridge (B15), and then either a tuk-tuk or public bus on the Lao side.
