Nong Khai is literally the end of the line—it's the country's northernmost railhead and bus terminus. To the east and west, the mighty Mekong meanders through largely uncharted territory, while across the river to the north lies Laos. The French influence that is still evident in the Laotian capital of Vientiane can also be seen in Nong Khai. The architecture of the town has noticeable Gallic touches, particularly the governor's residence on Meechai Road. Running parallel to Meechai Road is Rim Khong Road, lined by small guesthouses and restaurants. Laotian goods, mostly textiles, are cheap and plentiful at Nong Khai's lively market.
