Nakhon Phanom translates from Sanskrit as the "City of Mountains," although the mountains lie on the other side of the river in Laos In sleepy Nakhon Phanom you can enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the Mekong from a top-story hotel room. The long, well-kept river promenade provides pleasant strolls and panoramic views, with opportunities for quick forays into local temples. In spite of Nakhon Phanom's provincial location, there is a fair bit of nighttime activity, especially on weekends, and there is a bustling night market; the town also hosts a small but uneventful Indochinese bazaar.
