Korat

Considered the gateway to the Northeast, Korat is the largest city in Isan and the one of the largest cities in Thailand. Its size resulted from the need for a strong frontier city to govern the towns of the vast northeastern plateau. Korat is a modern mini-metropolis, complete with huge shopping malls, a few high-rise hotels, and a wonderful bustling night market, which serves as a good introduction to Isan's lively, friendly, local feel.

The city also has a very distinct culture from the rest of Isan (its own dialect and musical style, for example) and a strong sense of self, which grew out of its prestigious past. Indeed, many people in the city will describe themselves as Korat people as opposed to Isan people. Above all, the city reveres its beloved Ya Mo, short for Thao Suranaree, a local woman who led her people to victory over the invading Laotians. Her monument can be found in front of Phratu Chumpol, one of the four gates leading into the Old City, and homage is paid to her throughout the city.

Korat itself does not have tourist "sights" per se, but the nearby restored Khmer ruins at Phimai and the natural wonders of nearby Khao Yai National Park make it a great base for exploring the region. Additionally, the city provides a perfect introduction into Isan culture and has excellent food and accommodation choices.
