Buriram

Buriram

The provincial capital of Buriram lies between Korat and Surin and is a good gateway for those visiting the nearby Khmer prasats, some of the finest in the country. Founded in the late 18th century by the first king of the Chakri dynasty, this somewhat neglected city, which translates as "City of Pleasantness," is turning a corner, as evidenced by the $1 million conversion of an ancient moat into an attractive public park.

More peaceful than its neighboring cities, Buriram provides an opportunity to pick up some bargain silk products and sample the Isan lifestyle by eating local specialties such as larb at the bustling Night Bazaar, or listening to local folk rock in one of the city's live country music venues.
