Isan Travel Guide

The vast swath of Thailand known as Isan has often been characterized, if not stigmatized, by the existence of the Korat plateau, which makes up a good portion of the region. If much of Isan's landscape is flat and featureless, this is hardly true of the region's culture. Travelers to Isan have the option of visiting the mountains around Korat and Loei, experiencing the traditional life of the provinces along the length of the Mekong River from Nong Khai, or visiting the wealth of Khmer architecture found in the southern stretch of the region bordering Cambodia. The best way to approach the region is from one of the major cities, Korat or Udon Thani.
