This opulent hotel on the Chao Phraya still sets the standard that other hotels try to match. Part of its fame stems from the celebrities who stayed here in the past, but the recent guest book reveals no-less-impressive names. The four suites in the original building, now called the Author's Residence, offer a unique experience, with superlative service in big historical rooms. In addition to its excellent restaurants, the hotel hosts a riverside barbecue every night. There are cooking classes that teach you the secrets of Thai cuisine, and a spa on the other side of the river that lets you indulge in all sorts of luxurious treatments from massage to facials to soothing herbal and milk baths in your own private suite.

One thing I don't like about the hotel is that they will not confirm bed type (e.g. king) or confirm non-smoking rooms. What's up with that? Any five star hotel goes down to a one star when I am stuck in a smelly, twin bed for a week.
