Though it's north of much of the city and closer to the former airport than other luxury properties, there are plenty of reasons to stay at the Sofitel: the staff is very attentive, the property is close to expressways and subway and Skytrain stations, and rooms are gracefully appointed with antique prints, bronze statues of mythological figures, and temple-dog lamp stands to remind you that you're in Thailand. To the west is a view of the Railway Golf Course; the other side looks out onto the city's astounding vertical growth. The refreshingly cool lobby, with a cascading waterfall, is a welcome retreat from the city streets. Among the hotel's numerous restaurants and bars is Dynasty, a popular spot for Chinese cuisine, and Le Denang one of the better Vietnamese restaurants. Pros: attractive decor in guestrooms; convenient to Don Muang domestic airport. Cons: not competitively priced; far from most Bangkok attractions.
