Paul Feinstein

A luxurious riverside hotel, the Shangri-La is known for its impeccable service, fine dining, and lavish accommodations. The hotel doesn’t disappoint with an array of high-end amenities like their world-class spa and fitness facilities. Two separate towers offer guests two separate experiences--one for a quiet and more private stay and the other for something more sociable. Next to the Taksin Pier and adjacent BTS Skytrain Station, the Shangri-La is ideally located for families, business types, and solo wanderers alike.

room

The Shangri-La Wing and Krungthep Wing provide two different experiences for guests. On the Shangri-La side, rooms are furnished with antique Thai art, window-side banquettes, and views of the river through large windows. The Krungthep Wing features riverside balconies and more elegant furnishings.

Staying at the Krungthep Wing gives you free breakfast, as well as complimentary water, fresh fruit daily, pressing of two garments a day, and shoe shine service.

lobby

The Shangri-La Wing Lobby is a bustling area with crystal chandeliers, polished floors, fresh flowers, and giant windows looking out to the river. The Krungthep Wing is more peaceful with running water gliding throughout and a smattering of white leather chairs.

pool

There are two separate pools divided between the two hotel wings. On the Shangri-La side, the pool has a resort feel--even with its own palm tree island at the center. There’s a pool-side bar with an expansive deck that borders the river. The Krungthep pool is more adult, quiet, and lap-worthy--surrounded by trees and cut off from the rest of the property.

dining

There are nine different dining and drinking options at the hotel. Salathip is the crown jewel of the hotel and is housed in traditional teak-wood Thai buildings and offers up exquisite Thai cuisine and nightly Thai dance performances. Beyond Salathip, there’s Volti for Italian, Shang Palace for Chinese, and a Chocolate Boutique for, you know, chocolate.

If it doesn’t come with your room, it’s worth spending extra for the Shangri-La wing’s breakfast buffet. You’ll be blown away by the amount of options and quality of food at this riverside restaurant. Also, the hotel has its own riverboat dining cruise--take advantage of that as well!

The Long Bar inside the lobby of the Shangri-La Wing is open all day and has an impressive selection of very original cocktails. Grab a drink at the bar and stare out at the river through floor-to-ceiling windows.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Nestled against the Chao Praya River and just steps from the Taksin Pier and BTS Station, the Shangri-La is ideally located for easy access to the entire city--be it by boat, car, or train. The area is also very walkable with a number of restaurants, shops, and bars nearby. The hotel has its own boat that can drop you off at some of the surrounding attractions. Otherwise, you can catch water taxis at the Taksin Pier to get you up and down the river. The hotel is also next to the Saphan Taksim BTS Skytrain station that can get you to the center of the city in no time.

Restaurants

Don’t pass up a meal at Le Normandie (10-minute walk), a world-class French restaurant inside the Mandarin Oriental next door. Cross the river and you’ll find Thiptara (2-minute boat ride) the excellent Thai restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel.

Bars

If you eat at Le Normandie, take advantage of the Mandarin Oriental and head to the Bamboo Bar (10-minute walk) where you’ll feel like a turn-of-the-century Colonial explorer while sipping martinis. Alternatively, Sky Bar (5-minute walk) at the Tower Club at Lebua is a rooftop bar with jaw-dropping views and tasty cocktail concoctions.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The Shangri-La simply oozes class from the moment you step foot inside. The service, dining, spa, and gym facilities are all top-rate and the rooms have stellar views of the river and west side of the city. The location is also great--the hotel is next door to the main river pier and also a Skytrain station. Access to everything and a high level of luxury makes this five-star experience worth the price of admission.
