The Ambassador Bangkok

171 Sukhumvit, Soi 11, Bangkok, 10110, Thailand

Fodors.com

In a city filled with gigantic hotels, The Ambassador with its 760 rooms, 8 restaurants and bars, its own boxing ring, and a whole bird sanctuary is one of the biggest. Hotels of this size typically lack a personal touch, and that’s true here, but what lacks in character it more than makes up for in amenities. The hotel is incredibly family friendly but also caters to business travelers (and really anyone else). We mentioned the 760 rooms--there's literally room for everyone here.

room

Due to an abundance of rooms, there isn’t much to write home about in terms of décor. But, they are spacious, with earthy tones and all come with free coffee, tea, and water, flat screen TVs, and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Request a room on one of the upper floors--the views are phenomenal and you’ll avoid noises from the street. The basement nightclub Climax is closed so those noises are moot.

bathroom

Standard bathrooms have hotel branded products as well curtained off showers that tend to overflow onto the tile floors. The bathrooms resemble a dingy men’s locker room--but, hey, at least they’re clean.

YOU SHOULD KNOW If you want a better bathroom experience, upgrade to a suite. At least there you’ll get a bathtub.

lobby

The huge lobby has polished marble floors, overhanging crystal chandeliers, and large fish tanks to distract guests while they wait in the long check-in lines. Throughout the lobby you can find a variety of restaurants, bars, and retail shops.

pool

The third-floor pool is surrounded by green AstroTurf and palm trees overhanging orange lounge chairs. Open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the pool bar offers a variety of food and drink promotions that change monthly.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Just inside from the pool is a fairly depressing play area for kids--if you want to leave them somewhere while you take a dip.

spa

The Spa has a wide array of treatment options including massages, facials, wraps, and more. Check with the hotel for monthly specials and signature options.

gym

A good sized gym is decked out with hardwood floors and equipment that’s slightly prison yard-ish. But beyond the dumbbells, there’s a ping-pong table, squash court, an actual Thai boxing ring, and rooms for classes like yoga, aerobics, Tai-Chi, dance, and more.

dining

Dining options abound at this massive property and there’s something for everyone. Throughout the hotel you’ll find sushi, Chinese, international buffets, pub food, coffee shops, and more.

drinking

Besides the Pool Bar, there’s a Lobby Lounge with buy-one-get-one-free happy hour specials and a variety of other promotions that change monthly. Beer & Bites is the hotel’s beer garden with decent pub food and, you guessed it, more monthly drink specials!

gardens

Not easy to find, but if you sort of follow the signs, you’ll end up at the hotel’s very unique bird sanctuary. A three-story aviary houses a variety of birds and plants that are great for kids to come and visit.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Sukhumvit Soi 11 is known as a party street once night falls. Here you’ll find everything from wild and crazy clubs to relaxing lounges. The area is safe--but drunken tourists also attracts clever pickpockets, so mind your surroundings. Public transport is easy to find in this area (minus the traffic). There are cabs that consistently drive through here dropping off party-happy ex-pats. The Skytrain is only a 3-minute walk away so you can zip to other parts of the city.

Restaurants

Though it’s a train station away and a slightly heavy walk, Mitsumori of Tokyo (15-20 minutes by train/walking or 10-minutes by car) is worth the trek for raw fish heaven. Closer by, Punjab Grill (6-minute walk) is one of the best Indian restaurants in the city.

Bars

If you eat at Mitsumori Tokyo, you’re only a few minutes away from the infamous Soi Cowboy (5-minute train), a very seedy yet have-to-see part of Bangkok filled with neon-lit GoGo Bars and all the craziness that comes with. Above Eleven (5-minute walk) is a MUCH more refined rooftop bar with pricy cocktails and attractive guests.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Bigger isn’t always better, but in the case of the Ambassador, bigger gives you options. That is 760 room options, 8 restaurant and bar options, and any amenity you could want or need options. If you decide to stay here, know that the street is famous for its nightlife and can get pretty rowdy on weekends. Solid spot for families, business travelers, or just party-hoppers, this budget-friendly behemoth has a little something for everyone.
