Train Travel
Malaysian operated trains run regularly between Singapore and key cities in western Peninsular Malaysia, including the capital, Kuala Lumpur (called KL), and Johore Bahru (JB). There are four daily departures to JB; the trip takes about an hour and costs roughly S$20 one-way. The air-conditioned express train to KL also leaves mornings, afternoons, and nights (sleepers are comfortable). The trip takes about six hours, and the first-class one-way daytime fare is S$68, second-class S$34. Second class has comfy reclining seats; first-class has more legroom and fewer seats. Tickets for the "2 Plus" first-class cabin—which has air-conditioning, a washbasin, and two-berth compartments—on an overnight train to KL cost S$130; second-class tickets cost S$40 and are bunk-style with curtains for privacy.
E&OE Services, the company that operates the Venice Simplon-Orient Express, runs the deluxe Eastern & Oriental Express; the train travels between Singapore and Bangkok and on to Chiang Mai, Thailand, once a week, with stops in KL and in Butterworth, Malaysia, permitting an excursion to Penang. The 1,943-km (1,200-mi) journey takes 41 hours. Fares, which vary according to cabin type and include meals, start at more than S$2,500 per person one-way to Bangkok.
Most train lines accept major credit cards as well as cash. Reservations are recommended for trains to Malaysia especially on Friday and the eve of public holidays when locals head home. Call or check the Malaysian Railway's Web site to book ahead.
