Singaporean attitudes towards gays and lesbians are full of contradictions. On one hand, the rights of gays and lesbians aren't as protected as they are in other parts of Southeast Asia (sex between consenting males is punishable by a two-year jail term). The state also prohibits the free association of gay organizations and the publication of gay literature. Yet, a vibrant gay scene is blooming with many gay bars and clubs opening in and around Chinatown. You can visit Web sites, such as Fridae, People Like Us, Singapore Boy, and Utopia, for more information about where to go. The government has also made encouraging remarks about gays and lesbians joining the civil service, but the general attitude is conservative and a discreet "don't ask, don't tell" convention prevails. Gay and lesbian travelers shouldn't face any problems in Singapore's hotels. The usually non-confrontational nature of Singaporean society means that harassment is close to zero and public displays of affection will largely be ignored.
