Set at Sultan Gate of Kampong Glam, this large cultural center is inside the sultan's Malay-style palace, which is more like a big house than a palace. It was built in the 1840s on the site of an even simpler thatched building; the structure may have been designed by George Coleman. Next door is another grand royal bungalow: the home of the sultan's first minister. Notice its gateposts surmounted by green eagles. The center serves as a heritage institution for the local Malay community.
