Bras Basah and Bugis

Bras Basah Road and the surrounding streets were marked out by Sir Stamford Raffles as the European portion of the city in the 1800s, and now they are home to many of the city’s most important museums and national monuments. Before the city cleaned up the area in the 1980s, Bugis Street was Singapore’s pornographic playground—the stomping ground for prostitutes and transvestites. The arrival of the Bugis MRT station and several shopping centers drastically changed the scene. Many now refer to the total area as the Bras Basah Bugis (BBB) precinct.
