Fodor's Review

Raffles' likeness keeps permanent watch over the spot where he first landed in Singapore on the morning of January 29, 1819. The location has changed a lot since then: previously, this river was the artery feeding Singapore's commercial life, packed with barges and lighters that ferried goods from cargo ship to dock. There were no cranes—the unloading was done by teams of laborers who tottered back and forth between lighters and riverside godowns (warehouses).
