This minicity has three malls and five tony hotels—the Pan Pacific, the Marina Mandarin, the Oriental, the Ritz-Carlton, and the Conrad International Centennial. Suntec City, a mammoth convention center and shopping mall, is rivaled by an even bigger mall, the Millenia Walk, with its trilevel duty-free shop. The Marina Square Shopping Mall has a mix of high-end boutiques and bargain shops. Across the street from the mall, along Queen Elizabeth Walk, is the Esplanade-Theatres on the Bay, a massive performing arts center. It's part of an ambitious project by the government to create a cultural calendar that satisfies the varied interests of Singapore's multiracial community, to cultivate the local arts scene by supporting young artists, and to play a proactive role in arts education.
