Pulau Penyengat

Fodor's Review:

Another good stop by motorboat is Pulau Penyengat (Wasp Island), once the heart of the Riau sultanate and the cultural hub of the Malay empire. In the 16th century the Malay sultanate fled here after being defeated by the Portuguese in Malacca. The island is just 15 minutes by motorboat from Tanjung Pinang's Pelentar Pier. Sites include royal graves, the banyan-shrouded ruins of the palace, and the Mesjid Raya (Sultan's Mosque) -- a bright yellow building that was plastered together with egg yolks and is considered the most important place of worship in the Riau Islands.
