The sultan's Malay-style palace is more like a big house than a palace. It was built in the 1840s on the site of an even simpler thatched building; purportedly, the structure was designed by George Coleman. It now houses a Malay Cultural Heritage Centre. Next door is another grand royal bungalow: the home of the sultan's first minister. Notice its gateposts surmounted by green eagles.
