Raffles' likeness keeps permanent watch over the spot where he purportedly first landed in Singapore on the morning of January 29, 1819. This white statue is a replica of the bronze one, erected in 1887, inside Empress Place Building. Pause here a moment to observe the contrast between the old and the new. Previously, this river was the artery feeding Singapore's commercial life, packed with barges and lighters that ferried goods from cargo ship to dock. There were no cranes -- the unloading was done by teams of laborers who tottered back and forth between lighters and riverside godowns.
