City Hall

  • Address: St. Andrew's Rd., Colonial Singapore, Singapore

Fodor's Review:

Popular as a backdrop for wedding photos, this pompous government building was completed in 1929. It was here that the British surrendered in 1942, followed by the Japanese surrender in 1945. The Padang field in front was the site of independence rallies in the 1950s. Each year on August 9, the building's steps serve as a viewing stand for the National Day Parade, celebrating Singapore's 1959 independence from Great Britain and the birth of the republic in 1965. Visitors can't enter City Hall, which has active government offices, but can relax on the steps or take photos with the Padang in the background.
