Pulau Ubin

Fodor's Review:

Here amid the kelongs (fishing huts) and duck and prawn farms the lifestyle for the island's 200 residents hasn't changed much in 30 years. The name derives from the Malay word for granite, zubin. Indeed, there are five granite quarries on this tiny island. The mangrove and forest areas are havens for plants, birds (145 recorded species), and insects. Prior arrangements need to be made with the National Parks Board 6542-4108 before visiting Chek Jawa beach on the island's eastern tip. Granted its conservation status in 2001, the beach overflows with marine wildlife as well as colorful Thai Ma Chor temples -- Ma Chor Poh is the patron saint of seafarers. The best way to see this island is on bicycle; you can rent one around the Changi Jetty on Changi Village Road, near Le Meridien Hotel, Changi. Accommodations can be found at Ubin Lagoon Resort (1000 Pulau Ubin. 6542-9590), which is a cluster of kampung-style chalets. Otherwise, you can pitch tents on Noordin beach or Mamam beach, both of which offer unparalleled views of the Singapore skyline. Take a 10-minute jetty ride from Changi Point Jetty to reach Pulau Ubin.
