Bogyoke Market Review

This market is enormous but clean, well-organized, and—despite sweltering temperatures outside—not an oven. Come here on your first day in Yangon to peruse the offerings, pick up a longyi (traditional sarong) for temple visits, and take in the atmosphere. Shops here sell jade, silver, and gold jewelry; lacquerware; paintings by local artists; and a smattering of cosmetics and toiletries. This is the place to exchange money; you'll get the best rate, and sellers of inexpensive items are likely to ask for payment in kyat. If you're buying jewelry, do your research beforehand. This is the one time on your trip when you should look for government-registered stalls. On the whole, sellers here are not pushy, but no matter what you purchase, be sure to haggle.
