Champasak Palace

Box 178, Rd. 13, Ban Prabaht, near roundabout to airport, Pakse, Laos

Though once the residence of a local prince, this hotel on the bank of the Seddon River is impressive if hardly palatial. On the outskirts of town, it's a vast four-story complex with flanking wings and pagoda-like eaves. Guestrooms are royally large and comfortably furnished, with an antique here and there. Rooms in the newer Sedone wing are in better shape and cheaper, but have less character than those in the old wing.

PROS

  • beautiful terrace over the river
  • huge beds
  • new bar overlooking the garden

CONS

  • not central
  • dirty walls in some rooms
  • better value to be had elsewhere
