Yamaguchi

Yamaguchi

Convenient access to the Shinkansen at nearby Shin-Yamaguchi (which has no other notable attractions), unbeatable connections to territory's most remote hinterlands, and some disarmingly nice hospitality and local charm make Yamaguchi City a logical base for striking out for Hagi and Tsuwano—especially if accommodations are booked in those romantic hideaways. This capital city has a rare and well-preserved five-story pagoda, a slightly famous park, a decent shopping mall that isn't wall-to-wall people, and a lot of lush greenery descending from the mountains. The countless healing sulfurous baths of Yuda Onsen are only a short ¥500 cab ride or one train stop away.
