Getting Here and Around

Japan Rail can get you to Matsu from Tsuwano (2 hours 34 minutes northeast by JR Super Oki Express, ¥5,870) or Kurashiki, Okayama (2 hours 17 minutes northwest by JR Yakumo Limited Express, ¥5,550). Most sights in Matsue are within walking distance of each other. Where they are not, the buses fill in. The bus station faces the train station.

The Matsue Tourist Information Office is outside JR Matsue Station and open daily 9-6. You can collect free maps and brochures. The Shimane Tourist Association offers a substantial discount of 30%-50% for foreigners at nine of its tourist attractions; the current list includes the castle and four museums. You need only present your passport or foreigner's registration card at the entrance to these places.
