Even in its major cities, Japan is a very safe country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Most criminals here would back down in the face of a forthright Western response. Shouting for help in English, for example, is likely to scare off any would-be attacker. You should, however, avoid the back street of Kabuki-cho in Tokyo's Shinjuku district and some of the large public parks at nighttime.
