Japan has no issues with serious contagious diseases, but it is worth noting that measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations have not been required for a decade. As a result, these mostly once-in-a-lifetime childhood ailments can ebb and flow as minor pandemics (most recently, the mumps in 2006).
