The Hilton, which is a short walk from the megalithic Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office, is a particular favorite of Western business travelers. When it opened in 1984, the gently curved building was the largest Hilton in Asia but opted away from the prevailing atrium-style lobby in favor of more guest rooms and banquet facilities; as a result, the lobby is on a comfortable, human scale. A copper-clad spiral staircase reaching to the mezzanine floor above highlights the bar-lounge. Shoji screens instead of curtains bathe the guest rooms in soft, relaxing light, but overall the accommodations are plain and dated.
