Since the late 1990s, no brand has been more coveted by Harajuku scenesters than the A Bathing Ape label (shortened to Bape) from DJ-fashion designer Nigo. At the height of the craze, hopefuls would line up outside Nigo's well-hidden boutiques for the chance to plop down ¥7,000 for a T-shirt festooned with a simian visage or a Planet of the Apes quote. Bape has since gone above-ground, with Nigo expanding his business empire to Singapore, Hong Kong, and London. Here in Tokyo, you can see what all the fuss is about at a spacious boutique that houses the Bape Gallery on the second floor.
