Fodor's Review:

First built in 1882, this is Japan's first zoo. It houses more than 900 species including an exotic mix of gorillas, tigers, and their main attraction, Tong Tong and Ling Ling the Giant Pandas. The resident Giant Pandas are so popular that the Ueno JR station 3rd floor connection concourse has a panda statue, which is a landmark meeting spot. On a pleasant Sunday afternoon, you can expect upwards of 20,000 Japanese clamoring to see the pandas, so be prepared for large crowds and line-ups. The process of the zoo's expansion somehow left within its confines the 120-foot, five-story Kan-ei-ji Pagoda, built in 1631 and rebuilt after a fire in 1639.
