Since 1968, Ashoka has staked out the high ground for Indian cuisine in Tokyo—with a fashionable Ginza location and the dining room to match. Hushed and spacious, the restaurant has grand touches throughout: incense perfumes the air, the lighting is recessed, the carpets are thick, and the servers wear spiffy uniforms. The best thing to order here is the thali, a selection of curries, tandoori chicken, and naan served on a figured brass tray. The Goan fish curry
is also excellent, as is the chicken tikka: boneless chunks marinated and cooked in the tandoor.
