Fodor's Expert Review Kama-age Udon Sawanoi
The homemade udon noodles, served in a broth with seafood, vegetables, or chicken, make a perfect light meal or midnight snack. Try the inaka (country-style) udon, which has bonito, seaweed flakes, radish shavings, and a raw egg dropped into the hot broth to cook. For a heartier meal, chose the tenkama set: hot udon and shrimp tempura with a delicate soy-based sauce. Sawanoi is one of the last remaining neighborhood shops in what is now an upscale business and entertainment district. (Dash up a short flight of stairs to get to the dining room.) It stays open until 3 am, and a menu that also has a selection of izakaya staples like edamame is available in English.
