The Imperial Palace is located in the heart of central Tokyo, and the city's other neighborhoods branch out from here. The palace, where the Imperial Family still resides, is surrounded by a moat that connects through canals to Tokyo Bay and Sumida River (Sumida-gawa) to the east. Outside the moat, large four-lane roads trace its outline, as if the city expanded from this primary location.
