Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu

1–12–2 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, 150-0043, Japan

Why We Like It

The best part of this hotel is undoubtedly the location – you’re right in the middle of the busiest and craziest part of Tokyo. Within minutes you’ll find some of the weirdest, wildest, and best restaurants, bars, and shopping areas. The hotel itself is fine (but a bit overpriced), rooms are spacious, clean, and have great views – but there’s no gym, pool, or spa. If you want to be in the heart of the action, this hotel will meet those needs, but those needs alone.

Fodor's Expert Review

If you want to truly feel how many people are in Tokyo, come to Shibuya. And if you want to stay among the masses, check in to the Shibuya Excel Hotel. Beyond its location, there’s not a ton to write home about, but there are a few decent restaurants, spacious rooms, and a front row seat to overpopulation.

Room

Standard rooms have blue and white spotted carpets with small tables, good views, and cheap wood paneling. All rooms come with free water, coffee, tea, and slippers. If you book a more expensive option, you’ll get Nespresso machines.

Tip There’s a ladies-only floor with all variety of room size – because again – men can’t be trusted.

Bathroom

The typical bathroom has shower/bathtub combinations, automated Toto toilets, and a bevy of free toiletries.

Lobby

The bustling lobby isn’t much of a hangout and has incredibly uncomfortable chairs by the check-in counter. Off to the side you’ll find a lobby lounge with a café and bakery.

Spa

There’s no spa but you can order massages to your room in addition to manicures.

Dining

Dining here won’t exactly blow you away, but you could do worse. There’s A Bientot – a French restaurant with insane views open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. And there’s Shunsai – a Japanese option also open all day.

Drinking

The Estacion Café and Lounge is more of a bakery and coffee shop, but you can get drinks here after midnight. You’re better off exploring Shibuya’s crazy bar scene.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is right in the middle of the busiest intersection in the world at Shibuya Crossing – so plan on walking (but hold on to your wallet in the crowds). You’re also connected to Shibuya Station where it’s easy to get to every other part of town in a hurry. Just mind the crowds – the subway cars can get packed at rush hour.

Restaurants

For an adventurous way to eat, check out Zauo (9-minute walk) a restaurant where you literally go fishing for you dinner. Next door to the hotel, Sushi No Midori (1-minute walk) is a solid sushi spot with incredibly fresh fish.

Bars

Tokyo Fight Club Bar & Show (6-minute walk) is a concept bar where you can watch live cage fighting while knocking down cocktails. For something a little less lively, check out SAKESTAND (5-minute walk) where you’ll get a wide selection of rice wines while standing up! Very novel.
