Fodor's Expert Review Green Plaza Shinjuku

1–29–2 Kabuki-cho, Tokyo, Tokyo-to, 160–0021, Japan

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Budget travelers in Shinjuku willing to throw claustrophobia to the wind can settle in for a night at the Green Plaza, a capsule hotel in the entertainment district of Kabuki-cho. Like bees in a honeycomb, patrons sleep in yellow capsules stacked in rows along the halls of each floor. A number of different massages are added options not common in the capsule world. Vending machines dispense drinks, soup, and snacks. Underwear, slacks, and neckties are available for emergency purchases. The environment isn't tranquil, but it's clean, safe, and cheap. The facility is something of rarity in that women are allowed. To accommodate them, there is a separate bathing facility and a section of 30 capsules.

PROS

  • a top choice for a capsule hotel as it's fairly priced
  • convenient location
  • public bath area has mineral baths and saunas

CONS

  • small and limited accommodations
  • noisy neighborhood
