Getting Here and Around

The train is your best bet for getting to Yamagata. The JR Senzan Line from Sendai takes about one hour (¥1,110 or buy a W-ticket for ¥1,500, which allows one person to make a round-trip or two people a one-way trip from Sendai); via the Tsubasa Shinkansen it's 2½ hours from Tokyo (¥11,030). If you're coming from Tsuruoka, you can take the non–JR bus from S-mall (two hours; ¥2,400). Yamagata is easy to navigate, so walking is the way to go unless you need to head farther afield. You can pick up free maps and brochures from the Yamagata Tourist Information Office opposite the ticket turnstiles inside Yamagata JR Station.
