Fodor's Review

Though they are remote and rustic, some truly unique onsen resorts may appeal to intrepid travelers looking to soak and linger in the wild. One of the most visited resting spots is 2 hours 10 minutes from Tazawako bus station (three buses run daily from late April to late October). You can hike the 2-km (1-mile) nature trail—or not—and then come back to be steamed, boiled, or braised inside a resort building (try the old-fashioned "steaming-box" baths, where only your head protrudes) in a wide assortment of mineral baths situated among the bubbling mud and vaporous swamps.
